The Table of Silence è un’installazione itinerante di ceramiche, ideata e realizzata da Rossella Vasta, che l’artista porta nel mondo come ambasciatrice di pace attraverso la ritualità dell’arte, promuovendo progetti umanitari e di sostenibilità.

L’installazione si compone di cento piatti scultura di cm 40 di diametro, forgiati con tecnica del mezzo ingobbio e decorati con un leggero bassorilievo.

Questo delicato ideogramma, fatto a mano per ogni singolo piatto, diventa nella sua ripetizione un mantra, un invito alla pace e alla tolleranza.

L’idea della tavola come spazio di condivisione spirituale appartiene a molte e diverse civiltà, sin dai tempi più remoti.

Nell’epoca greco-romana il momento della condivisione del cibo nel simposio diviene scambio culturale, sociale e ideologico, che si realizza attraverso l’uso di suppellettili prodotte dalle maestranze artigianali che fioriscono nel Mediterraneo.

Il concetto di tavola come luogo di incontro neutrale, destinato ad accogliere e conciliare i diversi Stati tra loro, si è mantenuto fino ai nostri giorni ed ha trovato la sua soluzione formale nelle tavole della pace organizzate e sostenute da istituzioni pubbliche e private che si prodigano per la salvaguardia dei diritti umani nel mondo.

Il progetto artistico di Rossella Vasta si realizza attraverso un’installazione che richiama due fondamentali principi della tavola: l’ospitalità e il dialogo.

Il dialogo si basa soprattutto sull’ascolto dell’altro, favorito dal proprio silenzio. Grazie a questi suoi forti richiami simbolici, l’installazione di Vasta nella sua semplicità ed essenzialità ha unito l’Occidente e l’Oriente, trovando ospitalità dagli Stati Uniti al Giappone, ma soprattutto ad Assisi. The Table of Silence è divenuta a New York uno degli elementi artistici commemorativi dell’11 settembre e si ripete ogni anno con la dance-performance della coreografa Jacqulyn Buglisi.

Rossella Vasta aveva già lavorato negli anni ‘90, sempre cimentandosi nella tecnica della ceramica, sul tema della barca come archetipo dell’Arca, presente nel nostro immaginario quale luogo della misericordia divina e come elemento di congiunzione tra le diverse civiltà e luoghi. Proprio una barca accompagna le ceramiche nella versione italiana della Tavola del Silenzio che all’Ara Pacis prende il nome di “Mare Internum/Table of Silence”. L’installazione nasce - quasi in modo predestinato - dall’incontro delle ceramiche di Rossella Vasta con una barca realizzata a Lampedusa dai maestri d’ascia Francesco Tuccio e Giuseppe Balestrieri, che hanno utilizzato inserti di legni sabbiati provenienti da imbarcazioni naufragate che trasportavano migranti.

Quando i piatti di ceramica vengono disposti da Vasta intorno alla barca, La Tavola del Silenzio diventa un memoriale delle vittime del Mediterraneo e un simbolo universale del viaggio verso la speranza e la salvezza (così com’è per tanti migranti).

I due principali temi sui quali si vuole stimolare una riflessione con “Mare Internum/Table of Silence” riguardano dunque il viaggio dei migranti verso Lampedusa, geograficamente definibile «la porta d’Europa», e la loro integrazione, affinché le loro barche approdino in porti sicuri. I video che accompagnano l’installazione nelle ore notturne sono stati realizzati dall’Agenzia di Comunicazione Necos.

The Table of Silence non si configura solo come un progetto antropologico, che Joseph Beuys avrebbe definito“scultura sociale”, dove “essere artista significa condurre un’esistenza insieme agli altri, ricercando un rapporto di fraterna collaborazione per giungere a quella elementare e profonda comprensione di ciò che avviene sulla terra”, ma anche un percorso individuale nel silenzio di se stessi, che io per prima ho compiuto insieme a coloro che mi sono stati accanto, rendendo possibile la realizzazione di questo progetto.

FRANCESCO TUCCIO

Maestro artigiano del legno, si è segnalato all’attenzione internazionale per le Croci che ha realizzato con il legno spiaggiato delle imbarcazioni naufraghe lungo le coste di Lampedusa “che trasfigurano con forza e semplicità il dolore della fuga, la disperata ricerca di un futuro e il bisogno di aiuto, accoglienza e solidarietà...”. Alcune di queste croci sono state portate da Papa Francesco e sono entrate a far parte del Patrimonio Artistico del Comune di Lecco.

Circa un anno fa il British Museum di Londra ha acquisito una Croce di Tuccio nella sua collezione.

ROSSELLA VASTA

Nata a Palermo si laurea in filosofia presso l’ Università di Perugia nel 1987. Nel 2012 ottiene l’ Honorary DoctorateDegree in HumaneLetters dalla Cardinal StritchUniversity. Direttrice della Pieve International School. Ha tenuto seminari per varie istituzioni accademiche quali l’American University di Washington DC, Chautauqua Institution in Buffalo, New York, Cardinal Stritch in Milwaukee, Montana State University in Bozeman etc... Ha esposto in Europa, Asia e negli Stati Uniti. Nel 2015 l’Editore Petruzzi di Città di Castello ha pubblicato una monografia dell’artista curata da Barbara Rose.

PROGETTI ARTISTICI CHE VEDONO NELLA "TAVOLA" LA SUA FONTE D'ISPIRAZIONE :

A partire dai suoi studi filosofici e antropologici e vivendo vicino a Deruta, uno dei centri più importanti per la produzione della ceramica in Italia, Vasta lavora da tempo al tema della tavola nelle sue varie accezioni : la Tavola come Spazio Sacro.

Con il progetto itinerante «Table of Silence», che aprendosi alla collaborazione con altri artisti vede nell’arte un linguaggio condivisibile di pace e, tra i vari appuntamenti, in collaborazione con la nota coreografa J.Buglisi, commemora a New York ogni anno, a partire dal 2011, le vittime dell’11 Settembre; la Tavola come legame tra Oriente e Occidente con il progetto «I ChingLabyrinth», che si ispira a simboli orientali e occidentali;la Tavola Tematica che nel progetto IN MENSA, oltre ad essere un evento artistico, rende la tavola una sorta di «spazio narrativo»;la Tavola come luogo dell’infanzia e dei diritti del bambino con il progetto «Cantico per un Bambino», ideato per il service Kiwaniano «Una scuola per tutti», che è valso la costruzione di 9 scuole in Costa d’Avorio.

The Table of Silence is a traveling installation of ceramics designed and created by Rossella Vasta, that the artist brings to the world as an ambassador of peace through the rituals of art, promoting humanitarian and sustainable projects.

The installation consists of a hundred ceramic sculptural plates made by using the technique of «mezzo ingobbio» with a low-relief hand designed on every single plate, the repetition of which becomes a mantra, an invitation for peace and tolerance.

The idea of the table as a spiritual sharing space belongs to many different civilizations since ancient times. In the Roman and Greek era, the symposium became a place of cultural, social and ideological exchange. It was enriched with ornaments produced by great craftsmen that flourish all over the Mediterranean. The concept of the table as neutral territory, designed to accept and reconcile the different States to one another, has remained until today, finding its formal solution in “peace tables” organized and supported by public and private institutions who devote themselves to the protection of human rights worldwide. The dialogue is mainly based on listening to the other, that is conditioned to your own silence. Thanks to these strong symbolic references, the installation of Vasta in its simplicity and essentiality has united the West and the East, finding hospitality from the US to Japan, and especially in Assisi.

The Table of Silence has become in New York one of the commemorative artistic elements of September 11, and it is repeated every year with the dance-performance of the choreographer JacqulynBuglisi. Info: www.tableofsilence.com www.tableofsilence.org

Rossella Vasta had previously (in the 90’s) worked in ceramics on the subject of the boat and its archetypes in Noah’s Ark, that is present in our imagination as a symbol of the Divine Mercy. The installation «Mare Internum/ Table of Silence» - almost in a predestined way - is given by the encounter between the boat - that was realized in Lampedusa by carpenters Francesco Tuccio and Giuseppe Balestrieri with inserts of wood of shipwrecked migrants’ boats - and ceramic plates of Vasta’s “Table of Silence”, scattered around the boat. The “Table of Silence”, full of textural and symbolic values of the boat, becomes a memorial to the victims of the Mediterranean and a universal symbol of the journey towards hope and salvation (as it is for so many migrants).

The two main topics on which «Mare Internum/ Table of Silence» want to draw attention are the journey of migrants to Lampedusa, seen as Gate of Europe, and their integration, whenever and wherever possible, so that their ships can reach a safe harbor.

The videos that accompany the installation during the night were made by communication agency Necos.

Finally «Mare Internum/ Table of Silence» is not only an anthropological project, one that Joseph Beuys would have called a «social sculpture» where «being an artist means to live a life with others, seeking a fraternal relationship to reach that elementary and deep understanding of what happens on earth», but also an individual path into the silence of ourselves, which I have experimented together with those who have stood beside me, making the realization of this project possible.

FRANCESCO TUCCIO

Wood craftsman master, is known for the Crosses made from the wood of shipwrecked

boats found along the coasts of Lampedusa,‘’that with strength and simplicity represent

the pain of the escape, the desperate search for a future and the need for help, welcome

and solidarity ...». Some of these crosses have been held by Pope Francis and are part of the Artistic Heritage of the City of Lecco.

A year ago the British Museum in London has acquired a cross of Tuccio in its collection.

ROSSELLA VASTA

Born in Palermo, in 1987 RossellaVasta received her Master Degree in Philosophy at the

University of Perugia and in 2012 she received an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters

at Cardinal Stritch University (Milwaukee - USA). Since 2000, RossellaVasta has served as

the Director of Pieve International School in Corciano, Italy. Vasta has lectured for several

academic institutions, such as the American University of Washington DC, Chautauqua Institution in Buffalo-New York, Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, and Montana State University in Bozeman etc. She has exhibited in Europe, USA and Asia. In 2015, the Petruzzi Publisher printed a monograph of the artist curated by Barbara Rose.

VASTA'S PROJECTS AROUND THE CONCEPT OF THE TABLE :

Vasta’s background in philosophy and anthropology, and her living near important ceramic centre,leads her to deeply work on the subject of the «Table» in all its many aspects: Table as a Sacred Space with the travelling project Table of Silence gives the chance for the collaboration with other artists who see art as a shared language of peace; among other events, in collaboration with the famous choreographer J. Buglisi, every year since 2011,the Table commemorates in New York the victims of 9/11. The table as a link between East and West with the «I Ching Labyrinth»,a project inspired both to eastern and western symbols. Thematic Tables with the project IN MENSA: besides being an artistic event, it makes being at the Table a sort of «narrative space».The Table as a safe place for the children and their rights too, with the project «Cantico per un Bambino» (Canticle for a Child), conceived by the artist for the Kiwanian Italian service «Unascuola per tutti» (‘A school for all’), which earned the building of 9 new schools in the Ivory Coast.
